Starting off the New Year Right

When we announced that we decided to make RunKeeper Pro free through the end of January, that was a big decision for this little company. As one of the top grossing apps on the iPhone in 2010, it would be a whole lot of revenue to forgo. It’s been such a huge year for us on a number of levels though, and we really wanted to do something meaningful for everybody to say thanks. We also figured, with so many people scrambling to kick off their New Year’s resolutions, maybe this would make it easier for people to get up off of the couch and increase their fitness!

Well, it has only been 4 days, but our decision to make RunKeeper Pro free during January has been a ‘massive’ success so far. Between iPhone and Android, we’ve had well over a million downloads of our RunKeeper Pro app in just 4 days, which is a staggering number. We’ve also climbed up the rankings substantially, hitting as high as #5 in the entire iPhone app store (ahead of Facebook and Angry Birds). As I write this post, we’re currently ranked #28 overall (out of more than 300K apps), which is just incredible! And remember, for anyone that has not downloaded it yet, you can still get RunKeeper Pro for free through the end of January.

Even more powerful than the numbers is the way that the RunKeeper community has responded to help us spread the word. You’ve been such amazing evangelists, and for that, we can’t thank you enough! It really feels like a special journey that we are a part of together, and although we’re already more than two years in, it is still just the beginning of what we hope will be a long ride.

We have a ton of improvements in the works that we can’t wait to show you. In fact, the first batch of improvements will be announced later this week! We listen very closely to all of your feedback (which you do a great job of providing), so many of them will not be a surprise, but some will!

Stay tuned everybody. Our entire team is so thrilled to be a part of this journey with you, and it is only going to get better from here.

RunKeeper nominated as a ‘KillerStartup’

Just a quick post gang! As you can imagine things have been a little hectic here in RunKeeper land. For 2.5 weeks in, what a ride it has been! We’ve got a healthy and vibrant community that has emerged in very short order. We’ve received a tremendous amount of feedback from all of you. We’ve put a forum up to increase transparency and give you insight into what other users are asking about and getting answers for. And you’re even answering each other’s questions, which is great. We’ve fixed bugs and tightened up our product with a new release. And we’ve got another one that should be on its way in short order! (more details to follow soon).

First of all, THANK YOU. Without all of you being so enthusiastic and engaged in helping us build RunKeeper, we wouldn’t have had nearly as strong a start! Second of all, we know that how far we have come is meaningless unless we pay much more attention to where we are going. We are thinking and working around the clock (literally) about how to get RunKeeper where we all want it to go as quickly as possible. Rather than hurry features out the door, we really want to think carefully through each addition and do it right. But we want to think it through and do it right as fast as possible

We will keep the lines of communication open. Please keep all of your great feedback and suggestions coming. And keep the technical issues coming too, if we don’t know about them, we are less likely to find and fix them, so make sure we know if something doesn’t work how it should!
