How to survive those winter workouts: tips from the RunKeeper community
OK. Temperatures are dropping, which for most people, means finding the motivation to go work out is that much harder. Luckily, our RunKeeper users have lots of great advice on how to outfit yourself, get out of bed, and stay pumped up in these chillier temperatures. Read below for some of the tips we picked up from our community in last week’s #RKchat on Twitter.
Gear
We saw recommendations for thermal leggings, a warm hat, light gloves, winter socks, and windproof everything. And one user, @ardouglass, said a beard is his winter running essential.Morning Motivation
Some said the energy that morning exercise provides is motivation enough, while others needed a bit more of a boost. A few of our favorite recommendations were:• “I lay my running gear out before bed so it’s in my face guilting me all morning!” -@PMSLammy
• “So hard!!! A good song like “eye of the tiger” on the alarm helps!” -@Xavi_izaguirre
• “my dogs make sure that I’m up ;-)” -@shaunbellis
• “For me, it’s sleep in and get fat(ter) or get out there and #RUN!” -@carljsamuelsonGoing Indoors?
We went a bit controversial, asking users if they succumb to indoor machines like the treadmill and elliptical, or continue to brave it out in the cold. The answer was overwhelmingly for outdoor working out. The user community opinion may be best summed up by @LinLHale:”Dreadmill??? No way! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!”Bottom Line
We like where @Bud_T’s head is at: “dress properly, embrace the change in seasons, and know that your winter outdoor running will pay off in the spring.”Looking to get in on the discussion? Tune into the #RKchat on Twitter Fridays at 11am EST. Tomorrow we’ll be chatting about what you’re thankful for, with regards to RunKeeper and your health and fitness routines. We can’t wait to hear from you!
