Both apps come with brand new support for the Pebble smart watch, which rocked Kickstarter last year. And take a look below for the more new features specific to each operating system. There are lots of goodies in there!

    Android

    Weight & indoor activity entry
We’ve made it much easier and simpler to enter non-GPS workouts or your weight, right into the app. (So those treadmill runs can count towards your goals!) There’s even a visualization of how your weight is progressing over time.

    Widgets
Starting and stopping a RunKeeper activity is easier than ever with new home screen and lock screen widgets. No need to fire up the full app to access the buttons you use the most.

  • The RunKeeper app is going global—in six new languages, to be exact!

    image

There are more than 17 million RunKeeper users now in more than 200 countries all over the world!  This is amazing, especially considering that we are just a small team in Boston, MA USA and until now, our app has only been in English.

We’re thrilled to finally be changing that—RunKeeper is now available in six additional languages—Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Japanese.

We’re always looking to become a better personal trainer in your pocket, and we are thrilled to start to enable this capability in more of our users’ native languages!

These changes are live on Android now, and the iPhone version is coming very soon.

The Android 3.2 update also includes:

    • Enhanced displays on your goal progress after each completed workout
    • In-app live sharing to Facebook and Twitter, fitness insights, and badges for RunKeeper Elite users

Download the new version and give it a whirl!  (You can switch to a different language in the settings tab.) And if you have friends who speak one of these languages, make sure to let them know that RunKeeper now speaks their language as well :)

And finally, if you speak a language that isn’t on this list and want to see RunKeeper do the same, let us know in the comments below.  This is just the beginning!

  • We need your Android beta testing help—in other languages!

Android users, we’ve got a very exciting beta version for you to play around with. It’s our 3.2 update, which includes six new language translations: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Japanese! This also includes a great display on your goal progression after each activity, and RunKeeper Elite enhancements like live sharing, badging, and new mobile fitness insights.

If you happen to speak one of those six new languages,  we’d love any suggestions on translation fixes. We’re working this week on improving the text for nuances and subtleties across the different languages, and we need all the help we can get! Additionally, if there are any running specific terms that aren’t translated correctly, we’d love your input. You can reach out to community@runkeeper.com with this feedback.

As usual, it would be great if you could keep an eye out for any bugginess on the technical side. Please provide us as much information as you can (via the comments section below) about any bugs you’re seeing, and the steps you take to reproduce it. • Making the Most of Android With RunKeeper 3.0

Adam Stroud has long been one of RunKeeper’s most avid Phandroids, so we wanted to let him give you an inside look at what’s been happening in the development process for Android 3.0

We’re excited over at RunKeeper about the fast-approaching release of our 3.0 app for Android! This update includes a major visual redesign and long-requested new features, but it also reflects a refreshed thinking in how we build the Android experience at RunKeeper.

During the development process, we took the opportunity to not only rethink how our app looks, but also to rethink how we deliver it to our users. An important trait of any quality app is providing the user with an experience that they are familiar with. While refreshing each and every screen in our app, we took special care to ensure that the RunKeeper experience is in line with the overall Android user experience. Ensuring that we comply with Android design principles allows us to give our app its unique identity while presenting a feel that is still intuitive to the user.

We also continued giving the app a more modern Android look. We started this process with the previous release with the addition of the action bar. RunKeeper 3.0 adds “swipeable” tabs and Google Play in-app payment, alongside other tweaks. We also developed an internal component library that is heavily influenced by Android design best practices. This gives the user a look and feel that is more consistent with other high-quality Android apps. We feel this provides a better overall experience for our users.

While thinking about how to refresh RunKeeper, it became clear we were under utilizing the Android theme framework. With RunKeeper 3.0, we totally re-engineered our in-app theming to create a user experience that is not only consistent throughout the app, but also allows us to easily modify the look of the app in the future. These updates addressed the immediate consistency problems while also providing flexibility for future development. This was a major improvement over earlier releases, and creates a strong foundation for us to efficiently add on new features this year.

RunKeeper 3.0 was a large undertaking, but it was truly a labor of love. We are proud of what we have created and hope that the RunKeeper Android users will be as excited about the update as we are. If you’d like to test the beta build in the meantime; it is available here.
