Running became part of my life in my early 20’s, and started as something fun to do when I had free time, but soon it became my lifestyle. In my late 20’s I became a mom and I continued to stay active but a few years down the road, going through certain life changes, little by little it became evident that I was having less and less free time for myself. After 5 years I was 15 lbs overweight, totally unhappy with my unhealthy lifestyle and being diagnosed with early stages of RA on my right hip, I decided to take control of my life. In the spring of 2012 I made a decision to get my body back, so I ordered a program I saw on TV and started exercising at home. After a month I had lost 10 lbs and was feeling great. I also noticed that keeping up with my 10 years old son was easier. I also decided to take on the challenge of coaching my son’s soccer team. What a better way to stay motivated than putting my knowledge for the sport to practice and keeping up with 12 very active boys.
Being that active made me realized how much I missed running, soon after I started jogging, then running 3+ miles. Feeling optimistic after a few months I decided to signed up for a 10K, I was determined to train myself and finish that race in 1 hrs. I enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment so much that last summer I decided to run my 1st marathon. Not wanting to sacrifice too much of my quality time with my son I develop a plan around his sports schedule; while he was at practice for his activities I would go and do my training. My son has been my biggest supporter and inspiration; he joins me once a week on my shorter runs, pushing me to run faster. I’m so happy that I’m able to do this with him and keep up (or more like him keeping up with me). Never in a million years did I think I would be doing this in my 40’s. Running has become a huge part of my life.
Tufts 10K for women, Color Me Rad, Turkey Trot, Mudderella, and I recently ran my 1st Marathon, the BayState Marathon – Lowell MA 10/19/14 time 4:14.
Next race is on Thanksgiving morning running the Gobble Gobble Goble 4 mi in Somerville. I’m also running every sunday with the Reebok Run Club, empowered by Runkeeper.
